26 Generations of Derech Eretz

עשרים וששה דורות דרך ארץ

 Our Sages teach us (Midrash Rabbah Vayikra 9.3):

For Twenty Six generations “Derech Eretz” preceded the Torah as it is written “to guard the way to 

the Tree of Life (Beraishit 3); “Way”- that is “Derech Eretz”, and afterwards “Tree of Life”- that is 

“Torah”.

עשרים וששה דורות קדמה דרך ארץ את התורה, הדא הואדכתיב "לשמור את דרך עץ החיים" (בראשית ג). "דרך" - זו דרך ארץ ואחר כך "עץ החיים" - זו תורה.
