The 231 Gates

רל"א שערים

The Sefer Yetzirah-ספר יצירה "Book of Formation" which was written by our Father Abraham teaches us that through 231 Gates the world was created. This figure is arrived at simply by drawing a circle and writing the “Aleph-Bet”-אלף-בית (Hebrew alphabet) around the circumference of the circle. By joining each letter to each other letter one ends up with a total of 231 lines. The 231 lines connecting the 22 letters are called the “231 gates"-רל"א שערים. This means simply that the gateway of creation is through the combination of letters which represent Divine powers of creation.

22*21=231

The 231 Gates are hinted at in the name “Israel”- ישראל. In Hebrew, Israel is spelled YiSRAeL. These letters spell out the words "YeSh"- יש "RLA"- רלא, which literally means “there are 231!”

The joint gematria of the three letters "Reish"-ר', "Lamed"-ל', and "Aleph"-א' is 231.

In the first Midrash cited by Rashi in Parshat Beraishit (Beraishit Rabbah 1.4) it states that at the beginning of the Creation process, “Israel rose in thought.” The Name Israel thus alludes to the fact that Creation took place through these 231 Gates.

The Name "Hashem"- יהוָה appears 1820 times in the Torah.

This is a particularly significant finding as the entire Torah is written in combinations of the Names of Hashem in Hebrew the Holy Tongue.
