Yom Kippur- The Affliction of the Soul

Vayikra 23.29

ויקרא 23. 29

29.’For any soul that shall not be afflicted on that very day he shall be cut off from his People-כִּי כָל הַנֶּפֶשׁ אֲשֶׁר לֹא תְעֻנֶּה בְּעֶצֶם הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה וְנִכְרְתָה מֵעַמֶּיהָ (2698+11 words=2709=18).

The verse can be divided so:

·         For any soul- כִּי כָל הַנֶּפֶשׁ(515+3 words=14=8);

·         That shall not be afflicted on that very day- אֲשֶׁר לֹא תְעֻנֶּה בְּעֶצֶם הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה(1337=14=8);

·         He shall be cut off from his People- וְנִכְרְתָה מֵעַמֶּיהָ (846=18).

The Talmud (Yoma 73.b) teaches us that there are 5 types of affliction of the soul-חמשת העינויים.

Thus one is prohibited from the following on Yom Kippur:

·                Eating and drinking-                  אכילה ושתייה =797

·         Bathing-                                             רחיצה  =313

·         Anointing-                                               סיכה=95

·         Wearing leather shoes-               נעילת הסנדל  =709

·         Marital relations-                     תשמיש המיטה  =1119
