Beraishit Chapter 35 -Judah and Tamar
בראשית פרק 35 יהודה ותמר

Midrash Beraishit Rabbah 85.1

מדרש בראשית רבה 85.1

"The Light of King Mashiach"

"אורו של מלך המשיח"

1.’And it was at that time, that Judah went down from his brothers, and turned until an Adullamite man, whose name was Hirah- וַיְהִי בָּעֵת הַהִוא וַיֵּרֶד יְהוּדָה מֵאֵת אֶחָיו וַיֵּט עַד אִישׁ עֲדֻלָּמִי וּשְׁמוֹ חִירָה (2375=17=8).

........

Before the Torah continues with the “story” of Joseph in Egypt, it details in this chapter the next 22 years of the life of Judah. The understanding of this Chapter of the Torah is fundamental to understanding the process of the Final Redemption of Israel at the End of Days.

Judah, as we  learn from the previous chapter had “failed” in his mission to get Joseph down to Egypt. He bared the main responsibility of the “failure”. He was the only one apart from Jacob (and Isaac) who knew of the plan whose goal was to save the Dynasty of Abraham. Joseph was meant to be the “Mashiach” who would save the family both in the short term and in the long term-the Redemption according to the Promise that Hashem had given Abraham in the Covenant between the Parts.

Now that Joseph was missing presumed “dead” the mourning that Jacob was in was not only a personal one –loss of his son- but also a national one, as the potential “Savior” of the Dynasty had been killed. How was the Dynasty to be saved now? Where were the descendants of Abraham going to be subjected and redeemed if not from Egypt?

It must be pointed out that in the vision of the “Covenant between the Parts” Hashem does not tell Abraham where this subjugation will take place, He simply tells Abraham that his “offspring shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs” (Berasihit 15.13):

13.’And He said to Abram, ‘You shall surely know that your offspring shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and they shall enslave them and they shall afflict them four hundred years- וַיֹּאמֶר לְאַבְרָם יָדֹעַ תֵּדַע כִּי גֵר יִהְיֶה זַרְעֲךָ בְּאֶרֶץ לֹא לָהֶםוַעֲבָדוּם וְעִנּוּ אֹתָם אַרְבַּע מֵאוֹת שָׁנָה (7353=18 counting final Zadik and Mems as 900 and 600).
Jacob, Isaac and indeed Abraham had thought that it was to take place in Egypt (which it did) but now that Joseph the Savior had “died” another plan had to be put devised to save the Dynasty. In any battle or desperate situation different options are drawn up. If one fails then another has to be implemented. The mission that was given to Abraham and his descendants is World Rectification. This mission cannot be abandoned at any cost. Thus it was Judah who took up the role of “Savior” in the place of Joseph.

Why Judah?

He was next in line. Reuben, the eldest had failed both spiritually (moving Jacob’s bed from Bilhah’s tent) and physically (preventing physical harm coming to Joseph) and thus could not be trusted with such a mission. Shimon and Levi had disqualified themselves over the matter of Shechem and their wanting to kill Joseph. They were “hot-heads” and this mission required cunning. The next in line was Judah. He was the fourth son of Jacob.

Four is half of eight. The gematria of the word “half”-חצי is 108.

This mission was far harder than Joseph’s. As we shall see he went straight to the heart of the main adversary to World Rectification-Esau in Adullum/Seir and there he set a plan in motion which would lead to the birth of King David and ultimately to birth of the Mashiach son of David who will bring about World Rectification at the End of Days.

We learn in Midrash Beraishit Rabbah 85.1 the following:

R'Shmuel, the son of Nachman said: "The brothers were busy in the selling of Joseph; Joseph was busy with his sackcloth and fasting; Reuben was busy with his sackcloth and fasting; Jacob was busy with his sackcloth and fasting; Judah was busy taking a wife for himself;and God was busy creating the light of the King Messiah.
