The Flaming Torch and the Smoking Furnace

17.’ And it was, that when the sun set, and there was darkness, and behold), a smoking furnace, and a flaming torch that passed between these pieces- וַיְהִי הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ בָּאָה וַעֲלָטָה הָיָה וְהִנֵּה תַנּוּר עָשָׁן וְלַפִּיד אֵשׁ אֲשֶׁר עָבַר בֵּין הַגְּזָרִים הָאֵלֶּה (3538=19=10=1).

The verse can be divided so:

·         And it was that when the sun set, and there was darkness, and behold- וַיְהִי הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ בָּאָהוַעֲלָטָה הָיָה וְהִנֵּה (890=17=8);

·         A smoking furnace and a flaming torch that passed between these pieces- תַנּוּר עָשָׁן וְלַפִּיד אֵשׁ אֲשֶׁר עָבַר בֵּין הַגְּזָרִים הָאֵלֶּה (4508=17=8counting final Nuns and Mem as 700 and 600).

Rashi comments here that Hashem showed Abraham that in the future the four Kingdoms would fall into "Gehinnom"- גהינם (108) (Pirkei D'Rabbi Eliezer 28). 

The Four Kingdoms that will be annihilated at the End of Days are found in the Book of Daniel (Chap.8):

·         Babylon-                           בבל  =34

·         Median-Persian-  מדי ופרס   =400

·         Greece-                              יון    =66

·         Edom (Rome)-              אדום   =51

                                  551+6 words=17=8

Our Sages teach us that there is also a fifth nation that persecutes the Jewish People –Ishmael-ישמעאל. This is Islam- אסלם.

Interestingly the word "Islam"- אסלם is spelt with the same letters as the Angel of Death-"Samel"-סמאל. This is no coincidence.

The gematria of Ishmael- ישמעאל is 451.

The joint gematria of all five nations including Ishmael is:

551+451= 1002+6 words=1008

From here we now understand the significance of the phrase in the vision of Abraham:

The Bird he did not divide

הַצִּפֹּר לֹא בָתָר

Thus Hashem will annihilate (cut in two) His enemies that have persecuted His Children, the Children of Israel, over the centuries, but the Jewish People (the bird- הַצִּפֹּר) he will save. He will send Ishmael/Islam to do it.

At the End of Days Islam Hashem will turn Ishmael loose upon all the four other nations and destroy them. Then Hashem will save the Jewish People in the Final Redemption and give them the lands of the 10 nations that were promised to Abraham.

The gematria of the words “and it was that when the sun set”- וַיְהִי הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ בָּאָה is 684=18.

The gematria of the words “there was darkness”- עֲלָטָה הָיָה is 134=8.

The gematria of the words “smoking furnace”- תַנּוּר עָשָׁן is 1726+2 words=18 counting final Nun as 700.

The gematria of the words “and a flaming torch”- וְלַפִּיד אֵשׁ is 431=8.

The gematria of the words “smoking furnace and a flaming torch”- תַנּוּר עָשָׁן וְלַפִּיד אֵשׁ is 1507+4 words=1511=8.

The gematria of the word “pieces”- גְּזָרִים is 260=8.

The gematria of the words “between the pieces”- בֵּין הַגְּזָרִים is 1537+2 words=18 counting final Nun and Mem as 700 and 600.

The gematria of the words “passed between these pieces”- עָבַר בֵּין הַגְּזָרִים הָאֵלֶּה is 1850+4 words=18.

The "smoking furnace"- תַנּוּר עָשָׁן and the "flaming torch"- לַפִּיד אֵשׁ in this verse correspond to the "Pillar of Cloud"- עמוד הענן (945= 18 counting final Nun as 700) and the "Pillar of Fire"- עמוד האש   (426+2 words=14=8) that accompanied the Children of Israel for forty years in the Wilderness from the time of the Exodus from Egypt.

The following gematria supports this opinion:

The Covenant between the Parts

Beraishit 15.10  בראשית

10.’And he took to Him all these- וַיִּקַּח לוֹ אֶת כָּל אֵלֶּה (647=17=8), and divided them in the middle, and laid each half against (opposite) the other (half); but the birds he did not divide- וַיְבַתֵּר אֹתָם בַּתָּוֶךְ וַיִּתֵּן אִישׁ בִּתְרוֹ לִקְרַאת רֵעֵהוּ וְאֶת הַצִּפֹּר לֹא בָתָר (6989+12 words=7001=8).

Rashi comment that Abram divided each animal into two parts. This was the practice of making a Covenant-to divide an animal and pass between the pieces as it says in the Book of Jeremiah (34.19):

19.’The Princes of Judah, and the Princes of Jerusalem, the officers, and the priests, and all the people of the Land- שָׂרֵי יְהוּדָה וְשָׂרֵי יְרוּשָׁלִַם הַסָּרִסִים וְהַכֹּהֲנִים וְכֹל עַם הָאָרֶץ הָעֹבְרִים (6552=18 counting final Zadik and Mems as 900 and 600) that passed between the parts of the calf- בֵּין בִּתְרֵי הָעֵגֶל(782=17=8).

Here we shall see that Hashem passed through the pieces in the form of smoking furnace and torch of fire (verse 17 below).

Rashi adds that the birds were not dissected as they represent Israel- who is compared to doves and turtle doves- who will survive forever. The other animals represent the nations of the world (see Rashi here) who will gradually be annihilated (Pirkei DeRabbi Eliezer 28).

The gematria of the words “all these”- כָּל אֵלֶּה is 86=14=8. The number 86 is the gematria of the name "Elokim"- אלהים.

The gematria of the word “divide”- בָתָר is 602=8.

The gematria of the words “each half against the other”- אִישׁ בִּתְרוֹ לִקְרַאת רֵעֵהוּ is 1931+4 words=18.

The gematria of the word “in half”- בַּתָּוֶךְ is 908=17=8 counting final Kaf as 500.

The word “the bird”- הַצִּפֹּר has to be read as “Hashem Bird”-ה' צפר or-י-ה-ו-ה צפר. 

The gematria of these two words- י-ה-ו-ה צפר is 396=18.

The Bird of Hashem is the dove –היונה (71=8).

This is the Jewish People.

Why were there two birds (doves)-an adult and a fledgling- and why is the verse written in the singular-the bird? 

Because a Jew  (יהודי-35= 8) has two (2) lives-in “This World” and in the “World to Come”- and because he is immortal.

He is above nature as his soul emanates from the highest part of the Eighth Sphira .

When a Jew dies he is reincarnated again to fulfill his purpose in the world the mission of “World Rectification”-תיקון עולם.

This is proved by the gematria of the words:

5.’And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother's son, and all their possessions that they had amassed, and the souls that they had made (acquired) in Charan, and they left to go to the Land of Canaan, and they arrived in the Land of Canaan-וַיִּקַּח אַבְרָם אֶת שָׂרַי אִשְׁתּוֹ וְאֶת לוֹט בֶּן אָחִיו וְאֶת כָּל רְכוּשָׁם אֲשֶׁר רָכָשׁוּ וְאֶת הַנֶּפֶשׁ אֲשֶׁר עָשׂוּ בְחָרָן וַיֵּצְאוּ לָלֶכֶת אַרְצָה כְּנַעַן וַיָּבֹאוּ אַרְצָה כְּנָעַן (11853=18 counting final Nuns and Mems as 700 and 600).

The verse can be divided so:

The verse can also be divided so:

·         And Abram took Sarai his wife- וַיִּקַּח אַבְרָם אֶת שָׂרַי אִשְׁתּוֹ(1985+5 words=1990=10=1);

·         And Lot his brother's son- וְאֶת לוֹט בֶּן אָחִיו(1179=18 counting final Nun as 700);

·         And all their possessions that they had amassed- וְאֶת כָּל רְכוּשָׁם אֲשֶׁר רָכָשׁוּ(1979=26=8);

·         And the souls that they had made (acquired) in Charan-  וְאֶת הַנֶּפֶשׁ אֲשֶׁר עָשׂוּ בְחָרָן (2610 =1+8);

·         And they left to go to the Land of Canaan- וַיֵּצְאוּ לָלֶכֶת אַרְצָה כְּנַעַן(1079=17=8);

·         And they arrived in the Land of Canaan- וַיָּבֹאוּ אַרְצָה כְּנָעַן(511+3 words=10=1 or 1161=1+8 counting final Nun as 700).

Rashi comments here that Abram and Sarai would take in the male and female people (souls) respectively and convert them to monotheism and scripture considers as if they "made them" (Sanhedrin 99.b; Beraishit Rabbah 39.14; 84.4). The simple meaning is that they were slaves and slave-woman which they had acquired. 

The joint gematria of the names:

·         Abram-    אַבְרָם=243 or 803

·         Sarai- שָׂרַי         =510

·         Lot-             לוֹט =45

798+3 words = 801 or 1358=17=8 (Mem 600)

The gematria of the words “towards the Land of Canaan”- אַרְצָה כְּנָעַן is 486=18.

The gematria of the words “all their possessions that they amassed”- כָּל רְכוּשָׁם אֲשֶׁר רָכָשׁוּ is 1643 +4 words=18.

The gematria of the words “their property that they amassed”- רְכוּשָׁם אֲשֶׁר רָכָשׁוּ is 1593=18.

The souls that they acquired in Haran

הַנֶּפֶשׁ אֲשֶׁר עָשׂוּ בְחָרָן

Be Like Abraham!

3.’And I will bless those that will bless you, and he who curses you I will curse- וַאֲבָרְכָה מְבָרְכֶיךָ וּמְקַלֶּלְךָ אָאֹר (954=18); and through you shall all the families of the earth be blessed- וְנִבְרְכוּ בְךָ כֹּל מִשְׁפְּחֹת הָאֲדָמָה(1719=18 counting final Kaf as 500).

Rashi comments here that there is no greater blessing a man can give to his son than by saying “Be like Abraham”-תהא כאברהם.

From this gematria we can understand why there can be no greater blessing than this as at one and the same time to a blessing in the physical world (1)  and a blessing in the spiritual world (8).

The gematriot combined make 18 which is the gematria of the word "Hai" “life”-חי.

This is the of Name of Hashem before and after its division when the universe was created.

The gematria of the words “all the families of the earth”- כֹּל מִשְׁפְּחֹת הָאֲדָמָה is 933+3 words=18.

The only time that all the families of the earth will be blessed is when the descendants of Abraham the Jewish People will be given free rule over the Temple Mount in Jerusalem to rebuild the Third Temple.

Then the nations of the world will be blessed through them.

This will only happen when the Jewish People return to Hashem through repentance.

This will happen with the arrival of Mashiach.

The Lands of the 10 Nations promised by Hashem to Abraham at the End of Days in the Covenant between the Parts

The following three verses are read together as they are a list of the 10 nations whose lands will be given to Israel at the “End of Days”.

The 10 names have a gematria of 8:

19.’The Kenite, and the Kenizzite, and the Kadmonite, 20 ‘And the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Rephaim, 21 ‘And the Amorite, and the Canaanite, and the Girgashite, and the Jebusite- אֶת הַקֵּינִי וְאֶת הַקְּנִזִּי וְאֵת הַקַּדְמֹנִי וְאֶת הַחִתִּי וְאֶת הַפְּרִזִּי וְאֶת הָרְפָאִים וְאֶת הָאֱמֹרִי וְאֶת הַכְּנַעֲנִי וְאֶת הַגִּרְגָּשִׁי וְאֶת הַיְבוּסִי (7316=17=8 counting final Mem as 600).

The joint gematria of all 10 nations is:

Rashi clarifies here that at first Hashem gave the lands of the seven nations and in the future He will give the last three-Kennite, Kenizite and Kadmonite which are Edom, Moab and Ammon as written in the Book of Isaiah 11.14:

14.’And they shall swoop down upon the shoulder of the Philistines to the west, together shall they raid the children of the east; they shall send forth their hand against Edom and Moav and the children of Ammon shall obey them- וְעָפוּ בְכָתֵף פְּלִשְׁתִּים יָמָּה יַחְדָּו יָבֹזּוּ אֶת בְּנֵי קֶדֶם אֱדוֹם וּמוֹאָב מִשְׁלוֹחַ יָדָם וּבְנֵי עַמּוֹן מִשְׁמַעְתָּם (3907+16 words=3923=17=8).

The first three nations mentioned in verse 19 above are the last three nations that will be conquered by Israel under Mashiach (a reincarnation of Abraham)..

The end is the beginning and the beginning is the end.
